Humanity has been in a near-constant state of war. At least, that is the impression we get when we look at history, especially since antiquity. Despite its violence and cruelty, war often reveals underlying structures of social organization—particularly those that relate to globalizing forces driven by a desire for absolute domination. Within these impulses, we can discern how human beings shape seemingly innocent forms of asymmetry—subtle hierarchies and imbalances that, while not always overtly violent, are embedded in the fabric of social life and often serve to justify or normalize domination.
